Monolith to Microservices — Logistics Platform
Decomposed a monolithic logistics management system into event-driven microservices using domain-driven design, enabling independent team scaling and continuous deployment.

platform uptime after modernization
A monolithic Java application handled everything from order intake to dispatch routing to driver tracking. Feature delivery had slowed to quarterly releases, and a single failed deployment could take down the entire platform affecting thousands of daily shipments.
Client context: A logistics platform had reached the point where every release carried system-wide risk and organizational scaling was constrained by a single codebase.
We applied domain-driven design to identify bounded contexts and extracted services incrementally using the strangler fig pattern. The new architecture uses Golang and TypeScript microservices communicating via Amazon EventBridge, with shared nothing data ownership per service.
Domain mapping
Used domain-driven design to identify bounded contexts and ownership seams.
Strangler rollout
Extracted services incrementally behind routing and event-driven integration patterns.
Platform hardening
Standardized CI/CD, service observability, and deployment controls for new services.
Monolith retirement
Removed residual dependencies and transferred service ownership into independent teams.
Deployment frequency increased from quarterly to multiple times per day
Three independent teams delivering features in parallel
Platform uptime improved from 99.5% to 99.95%
Zero monolith dependencies remaining after 18 months
Architecture
- Event-driven communication via Amazon EventBridge
- Service-owned data boundaries
- Kubernetes-based runtime with isolated deployment workflows
Business Goals
- Increase deployment frequency
- Allow multiple teams to ship independently
- Improve uptime during release cycles
Constraints
- Mission-critical shipment workflows
- Legacy Java monolith with broad coupling
- Need for incremental extraction without program downtime
